Acting responsibly
WHO SAYS YOU NEED TO CHOOSE BETWEEN MAKING PROFIT AND DOING GOOD? WE ARE CHANGEMAKERS!
At the heart of our business is our vision to eliminate food waste and to end world hunger. The way we do business has a direct positive impact on the world around us, radically reducing food waste and directly investing savings in providing meals where they are most needed. Our business model creates profit from an efficient, technologically advanced system designed to implement our vision. Put simply, the more meals we sell, the better our impact.
We are committed to the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals.
A Meal for A Meal
A Meal for A Meal was launched in 2016 as the Romy Foods global food programme with the aim of helping defeat global hunger.
Through frozen meals delivered in Torus Pak® technology, we have reduced food waste by 90%. For every gram of food-waste we eliminate, we re-invest in one gram where it is most needed. The eliminated food waste from one meal equals a fresh meal in a different location, hence A Meal for A Meal.
In collaboration with the leading NGO SOS Malta we have launched our first initiative. Together, we have already provided more than 1 million meals to children attending primary schools in Uganda.

Environmental sustainability
Food waste is a huge environmental and human issue worldwide. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the carbon footprint of global food wastage puts it at the third highest emitter of Greenhouse Gases, right behind China and the US. Reducing food waste is an effective and high impact way of tackling climate change. A zero-food waste vision is at the heart of the Romy Foods system.

Romy Foods meals are resource and energy efficient
According to several respected universities and research organisations, the environmental impact of meal preparation is neutral when comparing a frozen meal to one prepared with a traditional cook serve method.
Industry experience indicates that switching from traditional cook serve or similar systems to frozen ready meals reduces raw material use by almost 30% (which translates to a 90% food waste reduction).
Our own market information suggests that traditionally cooked lunch menus use approximately 600g of food per person, compared to a figure of 400g using portion-controlled food; thus validating the available research.
Meal food content per person is also less wasteful based on more accurate portion control thanks to Torus Pak® technology.
Packaging – We use the least environmentally harmful packaging available
In addition to the positive impact of consistent portion size, low energy consumption for cooking and batch packaging, our unique Torus Pak® system uses low-migration certified food packaging made from polypropylene. We have considered the environmental impact of the various types of plastic present in packaging. For example, a report from the University of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, compares twelve plastics using the Life Cycle Assessment method, which takes into consideration the different stages of plastic from manufacturing to decomposition. Of the 12 varieties, polypropylene comes first and is therefore considered the least harmful to the environment. “Atom economy is shown to be an indicative predictor of low life-cycle environmental impacts. Polyolefin polymers exhibit 100% atom economy and result in the lowest environmental impacts.”
